See Saturn as you’ve never seen it before. On Sunday, April 28, 2013, the Chicago Astronomical Society will meet at Starved Rock Lodge (Utica, IL) in the Fox Ridge area to present a program celebrating Saturn in honor of its closest approach to Earth all year long. Solar observation will begin at 3:00 p.m., with special solar viewing equipment. At 3:30 p.m., guests can enjoy a presentation: “Saturn, the Great Ringed Planet” plus Stargazing Tips and what to look for.
Astronomical Society members will share observing tips (geared for beginners) including cosmic highlights of the month and year. After the program, participants will enjoy a little more solar observing. If you have a telescope and have questions about how to set it up, bring it along and members can help you get it ready for viewing later that night. Pre-cautionary note: Remember, never, ever point a telescope or binoculars at the sun UNLESS it is specifically designed for solar viewing or is adapted with special filters (or you use the “projection” method to view the sun indirectly).
At 7:30 p.m., “Astronomy for Fun” will be presented at Fox Ridge. After the program, guests will board a Starved Rock Trolley and travel a short distance to view Saturn at its closest approach to Earth. By this time, Saturn’s face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph Saturn and its moons. Jupiter and its moons will be visible at 8:00 p.m., for a brief time. Everyone is encouraged to bring a small red-bulbed flashlight (or a regular flashlight covered with red plastic or a red balloon). No WHITE lights will be allowed at the observing site. Attendees are welcomed to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Some telescopes available for viewing. This stargazing event is open to the public at no charge, however donations are welcome.
