Featured as a great event in Midwest Living Magazine, Starved Rock State Park is beautiful in the winter.
Free, 1 hour guided hikes depart from the Visitor Center at 9 am and 1 pm. Hikes generally go to French Canyon and the top of Starved Rock but may be longer if participants are up for the walk. Ice falls are usually present at most canyons (French, Wildcat, Ottawa, LaSalle, Hennepin, Kaskaskia). If it’s cold enough and the park rangers authorize it, certified climbers are allowed to go ice climbing at certain canyons.
ACTIVITIES AT STARVED ROCK LODGE
Guided Winter Hikes are offered on Saturdays & Sundays from December-March (11:00-2:00 pm) Cost: $12 per person. Join us for a guided hike with the possibility of seeing frozen waterfalls & eagles from the Lodge to LaSalle Canyon. Participants meet in the hotel lobby of the Lodge to pick up a snack and a souvenir “Starved Rock” backpack. After leaving LaSalle Canyon, the hike continues to Eagle Cliff and Lover’s Leap for the best view of the majestic eagles. The tour concludes at the Lodge about 2:00 pm. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear proper shoes or boots. In the event of ice and snow, we recommend Yaktrax for extra traction. This hike will be about 4.5 miles round trip. Remember to bring your binoculars and camera. Included are: homemade granola bar, bottled water, “Starved Rock” backpack and one voucher for small hot chocolate or coffee in our Cafe upon your return. Advanced reservations are required as space is limited. For more information or to reserve tickets call us at 815-220-7386.
