Wood Carvings

Terry Cross, President of Starved Rock Lodge, commissions Chainsaw Sculpturers to create their works out of dead trees surrounding the Lodge, rather than cutting them down and hauling them away. Mr. Cross feels that this is a way to allow trees to live on and, in turn, provide points of interest for Lodge guests and park visitors. This is entertainment for all ages! Our "Golden Guests" and families with small children, who may not be able to hike into our canyons, can clearly view all of the carvings while walking on the sidewalks surrounding the Lodge and cabin area. Thousands of photos are taken each year and we have received both regional and national recognition in newspapers, as well as, magazines. Chainsaw carvings have become a signature of Starved Rock Lodge. Many guests come to see the carvings after reading articles or seeing friends' photos. This is truly amazing outdoor art...in the perfect setting!

Author and artist Peter Wolf Tooth hand chiseled our famous Indian sculpture, located in the registration circle in front of the lodge. The sculpture was completed in 1975 and later moved to its new home on the Lodge grounds.

Jeff Prust has been perfecting his techniques as a self taught chainsaw sculptor since 1991. He believes the personality is in the face, and spends most of his time on the heads. This carving is one of the many to be seen when entering the main parking lot.

Our eagle sculpture was carved in 1990 by the late Larry Jensen. This sculpture was one of the first carved for the lodge, and is located just west of the Indoor Pool complex.

This life-sized carving of Abraham Lincoln came to us from husband and wife team, Tim and Karen Barker, of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. It Proudly stands eight and one half feet tall, and is located in the Front Lobby of the Lodge.

This bald eagle sculpture will greet you, when entering the main parking lot of Starved Rock Lodge. It is one of the many carvings located at the entrance of the Lodge grounds. Tim and Karen Barker carved this sculpture in just two days!

World Champion bear sculptor Jeff Prust has a reputation for carving "life" into his creations. This bear sculpture can be seen as you are leaving our parking lot.
